There are always two sides to a story

So why is it that people do not like to hear the other side to the story. I guess it moves newspapers or sells ads on the news networks, but in the end it just breeds malcontent for the people who have read about the other side, against those who have not. I wish the media would just do a better job at going a tab deeper instead of trying to get readership.

The worst example I saw of this occurred when a story broke in Tennessee about the energy use of former Vice President Al Gore. The story heralded Gore's energy use as 20 times that of a normal Tennessee household. His 10,000 square foot house is by no means small and is no doubt excessive, but the original article failed to mention a few things about his use. First off, he pays extra each month to use only "green" sources of energy such as wind, solar and hydroelectric. Second, his entire house is outfitted with compact fluorescent light bulbs, and he is renovating his house so he can install solar panels. Third, Gore also owns a few hybrid cars.

Another instance of not finishing a story happened last week during a speaker here on campus. For the most part the speaker, who was here for Greek Week, was very articulate and made very good points but he used a story to prove a point I believe could have been better stated. He was talking about Congress and their resistance to change and started talking about the minimum wage bill the House passed earlier this year. He then started talking about how American Samoa was not included in the bill, as I have discussed in a previous column. However, the difference was he did not finish the story, he did not mention the commonwealth was later added to the bill, he just used the story to rile up a most likely otherwise uninformed crowd.

On another, angrier note, we should all get our pitchforks and shovels go to New York and have a word with Ann Coulter. Out of any person who is involved with politics or government, she is the person I wish most would find herself not able to speak one morning. The amount of racist, ignorant hatred that spews from her mouth is truly amazing, and should be studied. The women who once said women probably should not have the right to vote, this week went on to declare John Edwards is a "faggot." Who lets her talk? I mean, she said this on stage right after presidential candidate Mitt Romney was speaking. It is amazing everyone she has out-and-out defamed has not sued her out of existence. I am just happy Romney and McCain came out and denounced her speech, though, I guess they had to even if they did not want to.
