A campus with no opinions does not exist

For those of you who noticed, The Avion did not contain an opinions page last week. For those of you who did not notice, now you know. The reason there was no opinions page was, well, because there were no opinions.
This fact is both saddening and frustrating as an editor. On a campus such as ours with so many people from so many places involved
in so many things, it is truly unbelievable no one has anything to say about anything. We are in the middle of what could be one of the most important presidential elections of our lifetime, we are embroiled
in a conflict that has lasted for some four years, and that just scratches the minute surface of world and political affairs. I also know for a fact this campus is not perfect. But so far this semester, we have had a sparse selection of input.
The Avion is a forum for students. Sometimes not everyone agrees with or understands a particular opinion, but we try to keep the paper open to everyone. The Avion has harbored many a thought-provoking and intelligent debate, but it seems few people can set aside enough time to write their thoughts down and send an e-mail. As I write this on Sunday, looking at our e-mail inbox, we again have no submissions for this week.
There is something about the printed word that evokes a certain drive and feeling in people. To read someone's thoughts in print, especially if they mirror your own, gives one a sense of being, and a sentiment that "Hey, someone else thinks like I do." The written word also carries with it more power to effect change and spur raw human emotion than any other form of media. These reasons are why people write books and do not just talk endlessly on television.
College students, more than any other demographic, should be opinionated. And since The Avion serves a school, this lack of thought is wholly frustrating. A paper without its opinions or viewpoints page lacks soul, lacks character. It's an empty avenue for the thoughts of its readership;
The Avion cannot fill this avenue. The staff relies rely on you as a campus to give this paper its soul and its character.

I totally agree with you Chris. And I'm glad you took the time to write this article.
May I suggest that the Opinions section be advertised a little more around campus? I'm sure students, faculty and staff see The Avion newspapers on the racks everyday. (Continued…)
