Game of the Week

In this installment of 'Game of the Week,' I would like to spotlight a website that has fully taken over any free time that I once had. This glorious site is Kongregate.com and it has accomplished this feat with flying colors.
What makes Kongregate different than other flash game websites? The first and most noticeable difference is the weekly challenges. In order to complete them, users must complete a certain goal in the featured game. For example, this week, the challenge is to make it to the first boss and defeat him in "Thing Thing 4." The task is called the Helicopter Death Doctor Challenge, where your character has to shoot down a chopper with a myriad of lethal weapons.
When the challenge is completed, players receive a challenge card good for another game currently in development. Kongregate is creating a card game for players to collect, trade and battle against each other. The exact details have not yet been revealed to the public, except that the release will be one day during April.
On April 1, Kongregate had a would-be release of the epic card game that every gamer has been waiting for. Well, it was too good to be true as when I clicked on the link, I got Rick-Rolled. What is a Rick-Roll? This humorous event is when a person clicks on a link for a game or video, and the link is a music video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give you up" instead of the actual game or video. It was a nice joke for April Fool's day, and they made up for it by giving players a bonus card for watching the video all the way through.
In addition to weekly challenges, the website offers achievements for many of the games. Achievements are similar to challenges but with one difference, there is no time frame in which you have to complete them.
When an achievement is complete, players earn a badge, and depending on the difficulty, players earn points to level up their accounts. Badges are not going to be used in the upcoming Kongregate card game but it is addicting to see how many you can get in comparison to your friends. Finally, the points players receive from completing achievements are used to level up their account on the website.
What does leveling their account do for the players? Well, nobody knows for sure, as that system is also still under heavy development. The only hint given was that levels will give players prizes and other privileges using this set of rules.
Kongregate.com will ultimately suck up all your free time in an attempt to earn badges, complete achievements, level your account and try to best your friends. I highly encourage everyone to create an account on this website, as it will be the easiest way to destroy boredom and the forces of evil at the same time.
