The Embry-Riddle Eagles baseball team traveled to nearby Jackie Robinson Ballpark to face the Daytona Cubs in an exhibition game Wednesday night, in the annual Battle of Daytona.
For the third straight year, the minor league ball club took the battle as they topped the Eagles 14-4. The Cubs are the reigning champions of the Florida State League, a single A league.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, as Matt Steele led off the game with a single. Steele was removed from base on a double play by the Cubs defense, but he was not the only Eagles base runner in the inning as Aaron Tea drew one of his two walks in the game with two outs. Tea stole second base and crossed the plate on a dropped fly ball hit by Austin Goolsby. Branden Roper-Hubbert picked up the Eagles second hit of the game in the next at-bat, scoring Goolsby and giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The inning ended with two outs as the Cubs' pitcher reached his maximum pitch count.
The Cubs offense produced five runs in the bottom half of the first inning to seal their win. After their first inning scoring spurt the
home team's defense rebounded and did not commit another error.
Embry-Riddle produced two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as David Reed led off with a four pitch walk. He moved around the bases as Richard Zentmayer picked up a single into right field. Zentmayer would also score on a passed ball.
Austin Quinn highlighted the Eagles pitching staff as he threw one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs while striking out two. The Eagles defense also turned two double-plays, one in each the third and fourth innings, a feat they have not completed in a game this season.
