Founded on Oct. 13, 1890 in Cornell University, Delta Chi began as a law fraternity. It is perceived that the idea was sparked by the results of the class election in the fall of 1889-90. It was one of the founding fathers, Alphonse Derwin Stillman, that had campaigned on behalf of another student. The results of the election were disappointing for Stillman and he discovered a closely knit group of men, Phi Delta Phi, had dominated the votes. They were also responsible for electing the editor of the Cornell Daily Sun. "While the class officer elections and the Law School Editorship incidents may have provided the initial incentives for organization, it soon became clear that those involved were looking for much more. Realizing a common desire for fellowship and intellectual association, they sought to enrich their college experiences by creating among themselves a common bond; a bond that would materially assist each in the acquisition of a sound education; a bond that would provide each enduring value."
