Rebecca Allen, a senior Human Factors student, has stayed busy the last weeks of school making final plans before her graduation Dec. 14.

Along with many other graduating students, she struggled to find a post-graduation job in today's tough economy. Allen began preparing for her graduation early though, and took advantage of the resources Embry-Riddle provides to students to land a job interview for a position with The MITRE Corporation.

"I decided yesterday that I was going to have a job when I graduated," said Allen.

Allen said that she accidentally found the company by browsing on the EagleHire website, Career Service's online resume referral system.

Allen encouraged her peers to not get discouraged with their job search.

She said, "One week ago I thought I was never going to get a job and this week I got an interview."

Allen said Career Services was helpful in preparing her resume and polishing her interview techniques.

With fall graduation nearly here, the Career Services Office has seen an increase in ERAU seniors, including Allen, making post-graduation plans.

Embry-Riddle has a high placement rate for their graduates according to Lisa Kollar, Executive Director of Career Services.

"Typically we do remain above national average," said Kollar.

The national job placement average according to NACE, an online resource for Career Services, is 19.7 percent for 2009 graduates, down from 26 percent in 2008 and 51 percent in 2007.

According to Kollar, Embry-Riddle's effective placement rate (including both having a job and continuing education) for fall 2008 was 41.3 percent and 48.1 percent in spring 2009.

In agreement with the statistics, Kollar says, "I think it's [the placement rate] going to improve." She says she expects to continue to see a gradual increase from both aviation industry and non-aviation industry jobs in the future.

Kollar also gave advice for students who were graduating this semester, or even next semester.
