University and College Students from the Central Florida area will have the opportunity to share ideas, participate in dynamic leadership workshops, and learn and develop their individual leadership skills when the Embry-Riddle Student Activities Department presents the 2010 Student Leadership Conference on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The daylong conference, with the theme of "Building Sustainable Skills," will feature a keynote speaker and a variety of educational sessions on varied topics. Some session topics are Effective Leadership: 10 Steps for Technical Professions, Marketing Your Leadership Skills, How to Change the World: Community Building and Problem Solving, and many others.

"The purpose of the conference is to provide students an opportunity to learn leadership skills they can sustain throughout their lives," said Amy Vaughan, Associate Director of Student Activities.

Donovan Nichols, Program Coordinator for Student Activities at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will be keynote speaker.

A nationally featured speaker, Nichols received both a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in Mathematics and a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from The University of Toledo in Ohio, where he became a student and community leader.

As a student, Nichols honed his leadership skills as Student Body President, working to provide a quality collegiate experience for his fellow classmates. His leadership qualities prompted the governor of Ohio to appoint Nichols to serve as a student representative on The University of Toledo's Board of Trustees. During his sophomore year of college, he co-created a society in the spirit of the Pay It Forward concept to increase campus pride without gaining any personal recognition in return.

Nichols continued to lead on a wider level by serving for one year in AmeriCorps*VISTA, the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty in America. In the wake of destruction from hurricane Katrina, he led a team of 98 volunteers to assist in Gulf Coast disaster relief. Also, as the Overall Director for Toledo's Dance Marathon, Donovan and his team helped raise over $43,000 for Children's Miracle Network.

Nichols has continued inspiring others as Program Coordinator for Student Activities at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and appearing nation-wide as a motivational speaker. In Las Vegas he has created opportunities for both students and members of the community to work for worthy causes, by organizing an Annual Pay it Forward day, styled after the movie which was filmed there.

The Student Leadership Conference will be held on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6. The conference is open to any undergraduate/graduate student. The cost of registration is only $10 for ERAU students and $15 for students from other institutions. Registration includes all of the day's activities as well as a continental breakfast and lunch. Registrations can be submitted at erauinvolvement.com, the Student Activities website, or in the ERAU Student Activities office, Suite 106 in the Student Center.
