The first four minutes of the contest seemed to be a back and forth battle between the two teams, until a switch in defense and a three-pointer from Blake Touchard sparked a 19-point run for the Eagles.
The stifling, pressure defense from the Blue and Gold outrebounded the Gyrenes 25-21, forced nine AMU turnovers, recorded four blocked shots, and had three steals in the first frame. Their offense proved to be a powerful force in the first 20 minutes as well, as ERAU's Eric Lorenzi led all scorers at the half with 11 points.
The Eagles headed into the locker room with a comfortable 44-25 lead, but ready to battle in the second half.
A lay-up from Ave Maria's Chris Jordan cut the Eagles' lead to 17, but that was as close as the Gyrenes would get for the remainder of the contest.
The Eagles' David Butler was sent to the free throw line at the 11:24 mark and drained both attempts, igniting a seven-point stretch that was highlighted by Brandon Caputo, who sunk three free throws and grabbed an offensive rebound for an easy bucket to put the Eagles up 68-41.
The Blue and Gold led by as many as 28 points during the second frame and closed out the 23-point win over the Gyrenes, 83-60.
Lorenzi led all scorers with 23 points, while Caputo was the second leading scorer on the night, tallying a career-high 13 points. Butler added 11 points, six boards and four blocks for the Eagles.
